Having a proper table setting is vital for practicality as all the essential dinnerware is arranged in order of their usage and within convenient reach. Besides, a properly set table not only sets the mood and elevates the dining experience but also enhances the appearance of the food served.
Here are the basics on the different setting types and how it is done. By following these steps, you can start impressing your family and guests.
Basic Table Setting
1. Lay the tablecloth or placemat on the table.
2. Place the plate in the center of the tablecloth or placemat.
3. Place the fork on the left of the plate, while the knife is placed to the right of the plate. The spoon is on the right side of the knife. Remember that, knife blades should be facing towards the plate; spoon and fork tines should be facing upwards.
4. Set the water glass directly above the tip of the knife.
Casual Table Setting
Casual table setting will vary depending on what food is being served. So you can start with the basic setting and add the following items to the setting, if necessary.
1. If a salad or appetizer is to be served, the small fork should be placed to the left of the fork. If a salad plate is needed, it can be placed on the left of the plate, above the fork.
2. If the soup is served as the first cause, place the bowl on top of the plate. Set the spoon on the far right.
3. The bread and butter plate should be placed above the fork, with butter knife positioned diagonally.
Formal Table Setting
The formal table setting is nearly the same as casual table setting, just consists more utensils for multiple courses. Therefore, the settings of casual table can be applied on formal dinner or luncheon. So, there are only a few things you may need to take note.
1. White and red wine glasses are positioned on the upper right corner.
2. Spoons for beverage and soup should be placed to the right of the knife. Cutlery that will be used first should be farthest from the dining plate. For example, if soup is the first course, the soup spoon will be placed at the far right.
3. Dessert spoon should be placed horizontally above the dinner plate.
4. Napkin can be folded neatly and placed either on top of the dining plate or under the fork.
